Sinus Augmentation in Timonium, MD
Sinus Lift Surgery for Upper Jaw Implants
Sinus augmentation, also known as a sinus lift, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. This procedure is necessary when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed.
At our dental practice, we understand that the prospect of any surgery can be daunting, which is why we are committed to making the sinus augmentation process as comfortable as possible. Our highly skilled periodontists use the latest technology to ensure that our patients receive the best care possible.
During a sinus lift procedure, our periodontists make a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone underneath. They then cut a small window in the bone and gently lift the sinus membrane away from the jaw. A bone grafting material is then inserted into the newly created space, which will eventually fuse with the natural bone, creating a solid foundation for dental implants.
At our practice, we use only the highest quality bone grafting materials, including synthetic materials and bone from the patient’s own body. Our periodontists will work with you to determine the best option for your specific needs and ensure the most successful outcome.
Not sure whether you need a sinus lift? A consultation with our periodontists will show how much bone you have and what your options are.
Following the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling and discomfort, but this can be managed with medication and rest. Our team will provide detailed instructions for post-operative care and be available to answer any questions or concerns that may arise.

When Is a Sinus Lift Needed?
The roots of the upper back teeth sit just below the sinus. After those teeth are lost, the jawbone in that area slowly thins. Over time the sinus can also drop lower, leaving too little bone to hold an implant. A sinus lift is usually recommended when:
- Upper molars or premolars were removed some time ago and the bone has thinned
- Gum disease has caused bone loss in the upper back jaw
- The sinus naturally sits low, close to the jaw
- You want implants instead of a removable partial denture for the back of your mouth
Our periodontists confirm whether you need one with an exam and imaging. [add: confirm 3D/CBCT imaging is used to plan sinus lifts]
Is a Sinus Lift Painful?
The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. If you feel nervous about dental surgery, we offer oral sedation and IV sedation so you can stay relaxed throughout.
Because the graft sits next to the sinus, your aftercare instructions will include steps to protect it while it heals. These often include avoiding blowing your nose, sneezing with your mouth open, and not drinking through a straw for a short time. Mild congestion or a small nosebleed in the first few days can be normal. Your periodontist will tell you exactly what to watch for and when to call us.
Healing Time After Sinus Augmentation
Healing happens in two stages. First, the gums close and any swelling or tenderness fades. For most patients this takes a week or two, and many return to work within a few days. [add: typical days off work the doctors advise]
Second, the graft slowly turns into solid bone that can support an implant. This takes several months, and the bone keeps maturing quietly in the background while you go about daily life. [add: typical number of months before implant placement]
Soft foods, rest and following your aftercare instructions all help the site heal well.
Can the Implant Be Placed at the Same Time?
It depends on how much bone you have now. If there is enough existing bone to hold the implant steady, your periodontist may be able to place the graft and the implant in the same visit. This shortens your overall timeline.
If the bone is very thin, the sinus lift is done first. The implant is placed once imaging shows the graft has healed. [add: confirm whether the practice offers the crestal (through-the-socket) sinus lift approach as well as the side-window approach]
Either way, you will get a clear, step-by-step timeline from consultation to your final tooth before treatment begins.
